A Brief History of Harrisville
In the spring of 1851, Martin Henderson Harris built a log cabin about a half mile west of Four Mile Creek in the area that would become the City of Harrisville. Historicharrisville The settlement was named in his honor, and the early years were anything but easy. In 1850, Urban Stewart built the first house in what would become Harrisville, but after a tragic conflict with the Shoshone, residents were advised to move into Bingham Fort. When the trouble eventually subsided, the settlers returned and began building the community in earnest. UEN
Agriculture shaped Harrisville’s early identity. Residents farmed wheat, corn, oats, and barley on the region’s fertile land, and the community grew steadily through the mid-1800s. Harrisville not only manufactured bricks but also washboards, cheese, and brooms, and even briefly made silk and cotton for cloth. Harrisvillecity That tradition of local industry gave the city a resilience that has carried through to the present day.
The Central Pacific and Union Pacific railroads ran through a portion of Harrisville, as well as the Utah Northern Railroad. In 1909, a local company laid tracks through Harrisville, Pleasant View, and on to Plain City, and the little steam engine that ran those tracks was affectionately called the “Dummy.” Harrisvillecity From its first inhabitants, to its incorporation as a city in 1964, to the present, Harrisville is a beautiful place to call home.
